Overview

Five best friends: Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, Emily Fields, and Alison DiLaurentis have a sleepover at Spencer's family's barn in her backyard. The girls drink alcohol and tell secrets, before passing out. During the night, Alison and Spencer leave the barn. When the rest of the girls wake up, Spencer is the only one to return to the barn, claiming she heard a scream.

Following Alison's disappearance, the four remaining girls drift apart without their clique leader and Aria's family moves to Iceland for a year. Two years later, Aria returns to Rosewood, where she hooks up with an older guy at a bar; she later discovers he is her English teacher. Hanna has usurped Alison's role as the most popular girl at Rosewood High School, along with formerly nerdy Mona Vanderwaal. The girls regularly shoplift from the local mall, until Hanna is caught, forcing her mother into a sexual relationship with Detective Darren Wilden to get the charges dropped. Spencer develops romantic feelings for her older sister Melissa's fiance, British doctor Wren Kingston, while Emily befriends a new girl named Maya, whose family has moved into Alison's former home.

As the story unfolds, each of the girls receive text messages from an anonymous blackmailer only known as "-A", who threatens them with secrets only Alison would have known. The girls suspect Alison is the one sending the texts, until her body is found buried in her old backyard.

The girls begin to search for answers since Alison's body has been found. They initially suspect Toby Cavanaugh, a boy Alison had blackmailed after having blinded his stepsister Jenna Marshall in a prank, which went horribly wrong. When Emily is nearly sexually assaulted by her boyfriend in the locker room, Toby comes to her aid and the two bond. She begins to doubt he is behind Alison's murder and the texts, eventually revealing she is a lesbian to him. Emily forms a romantic relationship with Maya, later coming out to her conservative, militant parents. Although Emily's father takes the news well, Emily's mother is disappointed and confused which strains her relationship with Emily. Emily's mother discovers marijuana in Maya's bag, causing her parents to send her away to a camp for troubled youths. Toby is subsequently arrested for Alison's murder, but also reveals that he met Ali the night she vanished to thank her for getting him away from Jenna. It is revealed that Jenna had been sexually abusing Toby, which is what Alison saw the night of the prank.

The girls decide to hold a memorial for Alison; however, someone destroys the memorial and Emily becomes a suspect after she is photographed there by "-A". Detective Wilden accuses Emily of murdering Ali, outing her to the other girls. Aria struggles with the secret of her father's affair with a grad student before Ali disappeared. She attempts to tell her mother, but "-A" sends Ella a letter detailing the affair, as well as Aria's part in the whole thing. Aria's parents quickly separate, causing her younger brother, Mike, to act out. Wren and Spencer's flirtation eventually culminates in a passionate kiss, which Melissa witnesses. She breaks off her engagement to Wren, treating Spencer coldly and straining their relationship even further. Hanna's insecurities nearly cause her relationship with her popular boyfriend, Sean Ackard, to crash and burn.

In the following weeks, the girls' suspicions shifts to Noel Kahn, a popular boy who Alison had been friends with. Hanna's friendship with Mona is jeopardized by "-A" when they spread a rumor that Hanna had liposuction the summer she lost all the weight; Mona uninvites Hanna from her birthday party. While snooping in the woods, Hanna is ran down by "-A" in a car, putting her in the hospital. She reveals she saw Noel writing on the back of Ezra's car, having learned of his romantic relationship with Aria. Noel attempts to blackmail Ezra with the knowledge of their relationship, but "-A" frames him using the answers to numerous exams.

Sean ends his relationship with Hanna, after "-A" forces Hanna to dance with a nerdy year-book photographer Lucas at a school dance fundraiser. Melissa's former boyfriend, Ian Thomas, returns to town and elopes with Melissa, surprising their families and the girls. Hanna connects with bad boy Caleb Rivers, a tech genius and experienced hacker; the two later begin a romantic relationship, but Hanna ends things when she learns Caleb had been employed by Jenna to acquire information on Hanna and her friends. Emily is bullied by a homophobic girl on her swim team, Paige McCullers, who later reveals she is gay after giving Emily a heartfelt apology. The two begin seeing each other, but Emily ends things due to Paige's insecurities over her sexual orientation.

The girls receive a video from "-A" which reveals that Alison had been seeing Ian the summer she disappeared. They come to believe he is her killer, and with the help of Emily's neighbor and police officer, Garrett Reynolds, formulate a plan to blackmail him. However, Ian pays a stranger to go in his place. Spencer and Melissa are involved in a car accident, and Spencer is sent to the local church to recover Melissa's cell phone. She is confronted by Ian, who reveals he knows the girls were trying to blackmail him. He chases her through the church and to the bell tower, where he attempts to push Spencer to her death and make it look like a suicide. As Ian prepares to kill Spencer, a hooded figure appears and pushes Ian from the platform to the ground below.

Aria, Hanna, and Emily arrive at the church to comfort Spencer, having called the police on their way. The police and media converge on the church, and one of the officers reveals that no body has been found, leaving them stunned as they receive another text message from "-A" assuring them things are far from over.

The first novel was published by HarperTeen in October 2006. In June 2008, Alloy noted that it was developing a Pretty Little Liars television pilot for ABC Family. The novels are being adapted for television by I. Marlene King.
